Canada’s Premiers are unanimously calling on Ottawa to fulfill its promise to amend federal bail laws.
That comes following an urgent meeting between the Premiers and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.
According to preliminary data on bail hearings, more than half of prosecutor attempts to seek detention are being rejected by the courts in BC.
Premier David Eby says BC’s Prosecutors only seek detention when they are concerned over public safety, reoffending, or publi confidence in the justice system.
He says that, in order to address concerns about rising crime and violence across the country, Federal bail laws must be reformed.
Together, the premiers are also calling for support to combat guns and gang violence.
Last year, Canada committed to reforming bail laws, following complaints from BC regarding repeat offenders.
