Police are renewing their appeal for information in the disappearance of a Granisle man who has not been in contact with his family for nearly two years.
Michael Randolf Kowalchuk, 57, was reported missing to Houston RCMP on June 26, 2025, after family members said they had not heard from him for more than a year. The investigation found he was last known to be living in Granisle, but efforts to locate him there and elsewhere were unsuccessful.
Investigators say Kowalchuk was last confirmed to have been seen in Prince Rupert in July 2024.
The BC RCMP North District Major Crime Unit now believes Kowalchukâs white Cadillac Escalade was found burned and destroyed on an unassigned road near Highway 118 outside Granisle in late summer 2024. The vehicle was discovered by a member of the public but was not reported to police at the time.
Police also believe other items had been left near the burned SUV but were no longer there when investigators later examined the scene.
Because the area is popular with hunters, campers and tree planters, investigators are asking anyone who saw the burned Cadillac, has photos or video from the area, or may have picked up bags, clothing, tools or other items near the vehicle to contact Houston RCMP at 250-845-2204.
Kowalchuk is described as a Caucasian man, six feet tall with a medium build, blonde hair usually worn in a ponytail, blue eyes and a light brown goatee.
