An unusual, but costly police chase came to an end in Smithers on Sunday night when officers were forced to fire shots at a runaway rock truck.
Prior to that, the heavy vehicle had been charging through the town, causing extensive damage to multiple properties and vehicles along the way.
RCMP were called out to the east side of town for reports of the sporadic driver at around 9:00 at night, kicking off a dangerous chase.
When the truck attempted to run over a police vehicle, the potential for grievous harm forced officers to fire shots.
They were eventually able to bring the truck to a stop on Broadway Avenue, just south of St Joseph’s School.
Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill says the incident damaged both the school and Chandler Park Soccer Fields.
A number of private properties and vehicles were also damaged by the truck but, remarkably, no injuries were reported.
Police arrested the driver under the Mental Health Act and an investigation has been launched.
