Today is Earth Day, and in honour of that, the First Nations Leadership council has released a new climate strategy.
Mandated by First Nations Leadership in BC, the Climate Strategy and Action Plan comes amid an age of extreme temperatures and environmental disasters.
BC Union of Indian Chiefs Regional Chief Terry Teegee says the need to develop a First Nations strategy come from inadequate and insufficient efforts by the provincial and federal governments.
Split across four priority pathways, the plan is made up of 27 themes, 63 objectives, and 143 strategic actions.
Those core pathways include: Inherent title and Rights, Capacity and Leadership, Land and Water Protection, and Climate Response and Preparedness.
Subsequent themes relate to legislation reform, restoration, education, sustainable management, food security, resource management, and many more.
