Smithers residents may notice a slight change in the taste and odour of their tap water, beginning this week.
That change is due to chlorine being added to the water system in advance of the annual flushing of the town’s water mains.
That flush will take place beginning on May 2nd, and running through June 3rd, though the chlorine must be added two weeks in advance.
Chlorine quantities of up to 2 mgs per litre will be added to the water, an amount that is safe to consume, but may be noticeable to taste and smell.
If the taste or odour is an issue, residents can let the water sit in exposed air until it dissipates, or boil it for a few minutes.
Taste and scent changes may be noticeable up until June 10th.
