City of Terrace brass was optimistic, following their return from meetings in Victoria last week.
Late last month, it was announced that the City would be sending a delegation to the capital to discuss concerns over social and safety issues in the community.
Prior to that, they had sent a resolution to the North Central Government Association, calling out what they called failures by the BC Prosecution Service.
In the resolution, they cited the rise in theft, property crime, and public safety concerns, particularly in the downtown, and blamed the Service for not cracking down on prolific repeat offenders.
A delegation made up of Mayor Carol Leclerc, Councillor Sean Butjas, and CAO Kris Boland were then sent to Victoria to advance the discussion.
BC’s Attorney General, David Eby, Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth, Mental Health and Addictions Minister Sheila Malcolmson, and Municipal Affairs Minister Nathan Cullen, all took part in the discussions.
City reps asked for support through funding to add public safety officers, and a detox centre proposed by the Northwest First Nations Alliance.
They also broached the idea of adding Crown lawyers and prosecutors, a specialized court which considers health and social services, and Crown representation on their situation table.
While no official responses were given, the City expects to hear back from the Ministers in the coming weeks.
