More work needs to be done for the Tahltan Central Government to explicitly endorse recent moves by Newmont Gold to acquire land in their territory.
While they recognize the steps taken by the mining company may create additional benefits and environmental protections, they are stressing that there is much more work to do to gain their consent.
Last week, a proposal by Newmont to purchase mining claims around Iskut became public.
That plan would see Skeena Resources first purchase the plots from QuestEx Gold and Copper Limited, before selling them to Newmont.
Under the proposal, Newmont would get control of the northern Castle, Heart Peaks, and Moat properties, while the North ROK and Coyote properties would be made available for the Tahltan Stewardship Initiative.
Last year, the TCG began working with the province on an agreement to address immediate concerns over land use on Tahltan territory.
They have raised concerns over the pace and scale of mineral development near Iskut and other Tahltan sites.
