Today the Provincial Government revealed their Declaration Act Action Plan, a plan meant to further implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples over the next 5 years.
89 actions are identified in the plan, split into four themes, to be carried out at the ministry level.
The first theme is Self-Determination and Inherent Right of Self-government, aimed at providing supports for implementing their own institutions, laws, governing bodies, and more.
One of the standout actions in this theme includes updating the Bilateral Protocol agreement in order to support K-12 First Nations kids.
Theme 2 focuses on the Title and Rights of Indigenous Peoples, where the goal is to allow Nations to control resources and land within their territories.
This theme includes the finalization of draft principles in the BC government’s guide to their relationship with Indigenous peoples.
The 3rd theme is Ending Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination.
This theme includes plans to conduct a review of Indigenous specific racism in the public school system.
The final theme is Social, Cultural and Economic Well-being, where the plan is to make the economy more accessible to Indigenous peoples.
It includes the creation of a new funding model to ensure that Indigenous peoples are able to get the Mental Health services they need.
