Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs are demanding the Royal Bank of Canada pull out of financing the Coastal GasLink pipeline project.
On March 25th, Chiefs met with leadership from RBC and City National Bank to discuss concerns over the project.
At the meeting, the Wet’suwet’en delegation made three requests of the banks, with a completion deadline of March 11th.
Those requests include: immediate revocation of financing and loans, agree not to provide future financial services to CGL, and have a follow-up meeting with the Chiefs prior to March 11th.
RBC is one of the leading financers of the nearly 7 billion dollar project, and a shareholder in TC Energy, the project’s parent company.
Opposition to the pipeline from Hereditary leadership has been strong, most recently resulting in a November injunction enforcement which saw nearly 30 arrests.
CGL has negotiated agreements with all elected band councils along the pipeline’s 670 km route, though not with the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs.
