In a rare act of punishment, the DFO has issued a pacific-based fisherman a lifetime ban, the first in more than a decade.
Scott Steer is a repeat offender under Canada’s Fisheries Act, though the ban stems from an incident from March of 2020.
That incident saw Steer and two crew members arrested following a high-speed pursuit, after being caught illegally fishing for crab.
In addition to the lifetime ban, Steer was ordered to serve 6 months of jail time, 3 years additional probation, including 12 months under curfew, and 75 hours of community work.
He is also banned from involvement in the sale of fish, or a fishing vessel for 5 years, and was ordered to forfeit the vessel used in the incident.
Steer’s crew mates Sammy Williams and Cristopher Schill each have related court appearances in the new year.
