An application for Uber to expand its ride-hailing service outside of Vancouver has been denied.
In 2020, the company was finally allowed in to BC, albeit only in Metro Vancouver.
It had applied in April of last year to expand further, but the Passenger Transportation Board has now rejected that request.
According to the Board, the decision was made in part due to declining taxi-service usage during the pandemic.
In May of these year, taxi usage was down 26 percent compared to the same month in 2019.
But, Uber argues that the number of times their app has been opened by people outside of Vancouver to no avail, shows their service is needed.
They also argue it can make a more reliable alternative to taxis in smaller communities.
A special committee report in to the impact on ride-hailing services on taxi companies is expected for July of 2023.
