Skeena Bulkley valley MP Taylor Bachrach says he will be pressing the fisheries minister over the closure of the steelhead fishery in both the Skeena and Nass watershed.
The closure took effect this past Tuesday and will run until at least December 31st and applies to all tributaries of both rivers.
Officials say the step was taken based on numbers being seen at the Tyee test fishery, which were the lowest in 66 years.
Criticism has been directed at fisheries officials, both provincial and federal, over river closures saying the problems with the fisheries aren’t going to be solved by continuing to close rivers to commercial and recreational fishing.
Bachrach says he wants to meet with the fisheries minister to raise the issue…but there is no one to talk to.
Newfoundlander Bernadette Jordan, who held the position, lost her seat and is no longer an MP and the Prime Minister has yet to name her replacement.
Despite pressure from the west coast, previous governments have appointed an east coaster.
Jordan’s previous spot is one of four new cabinet positions yet to be announced, and would be the fifth department head in six years.
