A comprehensive analysis of the ground at the site of a building close to Williams Lake formerly known as St. Joseph’s Mission Indian Residential School began today with a ceremony.
Whitney Spearing, Williams Lake’s First Nation manager of title and rights stated that the initial plan was to have 200 people attend the ceremony but due to COVID restrictions being put back into effect, they had to change their plans.
This ceremony took place from 9 am all the way to noon.
Spearing also mentioned that chiefs from nations like Tsilhqot’in, Secwepemc, Nuxalk and Lillooet had all been invited to take part in the ceremony.
After a mass amount of unmarked graves were discovered at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School earlier this year, the WLFN announced back in June that they were planning on investigating the St. Joseph’s site as well.
The initial plan for this analysis is for the radar to cover about 150,000 square metres over 35 days but eventually, they plan on checking out an even bigger area of about 460 hectares.
