A newly opened rental housing development in Prince George is giving Indigenous residents access to 50 new affordable homes.
Consisting of six new two and three storey townhomes buildings, the development was made possible thanks to a partnership between the province and the Aboriginal Housing Society of Prince George.
Located at 1919 17th Avenue, the wood-frame townhomes are a mix of one, two, three, and four bedroom units.
Rent in each of the units will be set so that no household will pay more than 30 percent of their annual total income towards rent.
A lack of available affordable housing in Prince George, particularly for Indigenous residents, has been a hot button topic of late.
Housing Minister David Eby acknowledged the need for more, even after this project, but says they need funding help from Ottawa to truly meet demands.
This project is the first phase of a four phase development, with the second phase expecting to bring 35 supportive homes for Elders and seniors this summer.
