In July of last year, the city of Terrace turned to the public for their thoughts on the situation in the downtown area and they have released the results of the dialogue.
The gathering saw businesses in the downtown core as well as residents who see downtown as an unsafe place gathering to determine what the city can and should be doing.
The main issues voiced at the meeting were homelessness, mental health, addictions and safety in general. After this, residents were asked to share their opinions on the portal “engage terrace.” Over a three-month period, the city received 131 visits and 37 of them took the time to use the portals tools to convey their thoughts and concerns.
Because of the feedback, the city hired a social development program co-ordinator, Linda Stevens, who will explore the ideas and suggestions from the meeting.
During a council meeting late last month, Sean Bujtas raised the issue of calling on the province to give more attention to issues facing the region. Both the minister for Housing David Eby and the Mental Health and Addictions minister Sheila Malcomson were invited to attend last years gathering, but neither took up the invite. That had Bujtas note if ministers aren’t willing to come here then they need to go to Victoria to get the government to pay attention to northwest issues.
