Earlier today, a statement was sent out by the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, stating that there needs to be quicker response times when it comes to handling disasters like floods and that it’s simply not enough to just be reactionary.
Yesterday, the chief in question, RoseAnne Archibald, visited some of the BC areas hit the hardest by the floods and she said that the things that most affected her was the site of Highway 8’s ruin and what she was told by local chiefs about the impacts on their communities.
Archibald also said that nearly a third of BC First Nations got affected by the floods in some way, shape or form.
As a result of what she saw, Archibald is calling for the Federal Government to give long-term sustainable funding to the First Nations Emergency Management Society so that they are more capable of getting ready to help out communities before these disasters happen.
