Northern tenants who are having a hard time making end’s meet now have access to a new service, thanks to an expanded partnership.
BC Rent Bank services are now being made available across the entirety of BC, and for the first time in the North.
Rent banks help to provide interest free loans to low and moderate income families so they do not lose their housing.
Thanks to a partnership between the Vancity Community Foundation, and the Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society, residents of the North now have access to the services.
During dire circumstances, residents can apply for the interest-free loans to go towards utilities, rent, or deposits when housing has been secured, but funds are lacking.
For the time being, the Elizabeth Fry Society will run the centralized system while new communities search for local operators.
