Quesnel has cancelled one Child Care related grant application, in favour of another.
A study from 2020 identified that the City of Quesnel needed to add 86 child care spaces over 5 years to meet BC averages.
Later that year, the City was approved for 1.4 million dollars in grant funding from the Childcare BC New Spaces Fund.
But an updated quantity survey has revealed that more funding would be required to adequately undertake the project.
Since the fund could not be topped up, the City has decided to cancel the previous grant to apply for up to 3 million from the updated grant stream.
Costs for the project, to be located at 420 Webster Avenue, are estimated at just over 2.4 million dollars.
In addition to reapplying for the funding, Council also made a commitment to operate the 57 unit project as a licensed child care facility for at least 15 years.
