A Supreme Court decision released today is encouraging according to two groups supporting Indigenous peoples in BC.
The Union of BC Chiefs and the BC Civil Liberties Association banded together to intervine in an earlier court case for improved circumstantial accountability in the justice system.
Relating to the Ewert v Canada case challenging bias against Indigenous peoples in the prison system, the groups asked that the Gladue framework be assigned to all Indigenous cases.
The Supreme Court decided today that in order for the corrections system to operate properly, the assumption that all prisoners can be treated fairly by being treated the same way must be abandoned.
