Bella Coola RCMP are commending a local tour operator and the Nuxalk Guardian Watchmen for rescuing a trio of capsized kayakers.
Mounties say Leonard Ellis was hosting a tour on the North Bentnick Arm May 25th when he noticed some kayakers in trouble.
One of the kayaks capsized, throwing two paddlers into the frigid water. While trying to climb aboard the second kayak, it capsized as well, putting the third paddler into the water.
Ellis went to their aid and called in a distress call. RCMP say the Nuxalk Coastal Guardian Watchmen arrived soon after to complete the rescue operation.
The swift actions of Mr. Ellis, his guests, and the Nuxalk Coastal Guardian Watchmen saved the lives of three young men,” said Sergeant Rick Skolrood, Detachment Commander of the Bella Coola RCMP. “It exemplifies the spirit of community and good citizenship we should all aspire to.
The three kayakers were transported to hospital for medical treatment.
