The Kitselas Community of Gitaus will be getting a new multi-use community trail network, with the Kitselas Lands and Resources Department saying work to plot the route will begin soon.
Section 1 of the trail on the northeast side of town will be built later this spring, with the rest happening sequentially in phases.
The Nation says some sections of the trail overlap with existing Firesmart areas, and also confirmed its route will not pass through residential lots.
The community trail project was made possible with Treaty implementation funding, and the Nation says it’s construction was identified as a community priority in engagement sessions on everything from the Community plan, to the Heath Plan and the Land Use Plan.
Once complete, the hopes are that the community trail encircling Gitaus will encourage active lifestyles within the community, and foster a stronger sense of connection to the land for Kitselas members living there.
