The Nuxalk Nation has criticized Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Ellis Ross for planning a meeting with the Bella Coola Rod and Gun Club without first consulting the Nation, following a grizzly bear attack that injured three children and a teacher.
Chief Councilor Samuel Schooner told CFNR that the community first learned of Ross’ plans through social media. “Honestly, it’s shocking… we didn’t even know that he was coming,” Schooner said. He added that despite the MP having his personal cell number, the Nation received no direct communication. By contrast, provincial officials, including the premier and ministers, reached out immediately to offer support.
Schooner emphasized the importance of establishing a clear protocol for federal representatives visiting Nuxalk territory. “Visits should always prioritize consulting with us first. It’s our Nation, it’s our land,” he said. He also noted that Ross’ approach has damaged trust, a relationship that other MPs in the region have historically maintained through timely engagement during crises.
Looking ahead, the Nation says a respectful approach from Ross would include acknowledging the community’s needs, offering an apology, and engaging in direct dialogue with residents. “After all we went through as a community… he should be ready to apologize,” Schooner added. He stressed that meaningful communication and relationship-building are essential for federal representatives working in Indigenous territories.
