Northern Health and the First Nations Health Authority are warning residents in the Northwest region of BC about the presence of Medetomidine in drugs, based on recent drug checking results. Medetomidine is a non-opioid sedative that can cause deep and prolonged sedation, dangerously slow or absent pulse, and increases the risk of fatal and complex overdoses. Overdoses may require multiple doses of naloxone or may not respond to it.
Residents who use substances are urged to take precautions. Avoid using drugs alone and always carry naloxone. Consider using small amounts first and go slowly, and do not mix substances or mix drugs with alcohol. Supervised consumption and overdose prevention services are recommended whenever possible.
For those using alone, the Lifeguard app or the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-6677 are available for support. Overdose symptoms require immediate action; call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number if someone becomes unresponsive.
This advisory will remain in effect until December 25, 2025. For information on local overdose prevention sites and harm reduction services, visit Northern Health’s website. Awareness and caution are crucial to reduce the risk of serious harm.
