Terrace Mayor Sean Bujtas spent last week in Victoria meeting with Premier John Horgan and several provincial ministers to discuss the expected impacts of major economic growth in the region. With four of twelve proposed major projects slated for fast-tracking, Terrace will need additional support to manage infrastructure, public safety, and housing demands.
During the meetings, Mayor Bujtas discussed funding for a water system at the Industrial Park with Ministers Khalon and Boyle, and the potential to create a training hub for local industry with Minister Brar. He requested additional provincial police officers for Terrace to support businesses affected by shelters and explored establishing programs to address repeat property crime. Transportation issues, including pedestrian safety on the Sande overpass and improved access across CN tracks, were also discussed with Minister Farnworth.
Housing needs were raised with Minister Neill, who was asked to provide 26 acres of Crown land within the city. Mayor Bujtas also highlighted ongoing collaborations with Indigenous communities and updates on Crown land initiatives with Minister Herbert.
While Mayor Bujtas reported having productive conversations, he emphasized that there is still much work to do to ensure Terrace can meet the challenges of rapid economic growth. He also shared some locally pickled cucumbers with Premier Eby during the visit, adding a personal touch to the discussions.
