The Conservative Party of British Columbia says a majority of its caucus has informed the party’s legal counsel that they no longer have confidence in Opposition Leader John Rustad. As a result, Rustad has been removed from the position.
Caucus has selected MLA Trevor Halford to serve as interim leader. The party’s Board of Directors has also passed a motion under section 11.02 of its constitution, stating Rustad is “professionally incapacitated” and unable to continue as party leader, and has formally appointed Halford in the interim role.
In its statement, the party thanked Rustad for his contributions and leadership during a period of growth, and wished him and his family well.
The Board will now begin the process of organizing a leadership race, with more details to be announced once the process is finalized.
