Mark Carney’s proposed $500 billion in government spending is under intense scrutiny as the Conservative Party pushes for a budget before the summer break. Despite promising to limit operating spending to 2 percent, Carney’s plan would hike overall government spending by 8 percent, with consultant costs alone jumping 37 percent, amounting to $26 billion annually. This increase would cost Canadian families an extra $1,400 each year for consultant services.
The proposal also includes a 6 percent growth in bureaucracy, more than double the combined rate of inflation and population growth. Conservatives argue that these increases in spending will lead to higher taxes, inflation, and debt.
Carney’s campaign promises to have a plan in place have yet to materialize, leaving many questioning the Liberal government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility. Without a budget or economic update in over a year, critics say it’s time for the government to fulfill its obligations to Parliament and the Canadian public.
