Prince Rupert Receives Funding for Indigenous Cultural Safety in Emergency Management

The Province of British Columbia is investing $1 million in local projects to enhance Indigenous cultural safety in emergency management. This funding will support 20 projects across the province, including a $110,000 initiative for the North Coast Regional District, which serves Prince Rupert and Port Edward. Prince Rupert’s Mayor, Herb Pond, highlighted the importance of this project, noting that the community, which is over 40% Indigenous, stands to benefit from the training and collaboration between local governments and Indigenous communities. MLA Tamara Davidson, who represents the North Coast-Haida Gwaii region, emphasized the critical role of these efforts in improving communication and understanding during emergencies. This funding will help ensure that emergency management practices are inclusive, culturally sensitive, and foster stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, ultimately boosting resilience in the face of natural disasters.
