Prince Rupert Adopts Climate Change Adaptation Plan

The City of Prince Rupert has adopted a new Climate Change Adaptation Plan aimed at preparing for future climate risks. The plan focuses on potential threats such as tsunamis, wildfires, extreme heat, flooding, and landslides, which are expected to increase in the coming years. Key issues highlighted include disruptions to travel, water systems, human-wildlife interactions, health, and access to essential services, along with challenges to the local food supply. Actions to address these risks, including a community Food Strategy, are already underway. Developed by Sustainability Solutions Group, the plan involved consultations with local residents, community groups, businesses, and Indigenous organizations. It complements the 2017 Community Energy and Emissions Plan, which targets reducing emissions from municipal activities. The project was funded through the Union of BC Municipalities’ Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Adaptation grant, part of the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund. The plan will be integrated into the City’s ongoing work and budget processes.
