Slow Down and Move Over Focus on Road Safety

BC Highway Patrol is reminding drivers this February to follow the 70/40 rule when approaching vehicles with flashing lights. The rule, which is part of the BC Motor Vehicle Act, requires drivers to reduce their speed and, when possible, move to the farthest lane away from stopped vehicles displaying flashing red, blue, or yellow lights. This applies to police, fire, ambulance, construction, tow trucks, and utility vehicles. When the speed limit is 80 km/h or higher, drivers should slow to 70 km/h or less; when the limit is lower than 80 km/h, drivers must reduce speed to 40 km/h or less. This law aims to protect first responders and roadside workers. While some drivers may be frustrated by the slowdown, BC Highway Patrol stresses that it’s safer than facing a $173 ticket or contributing to an accident.
