Province Streamlines Permitting for Major Electrical Infrastructure

The BC government is moving to speed up the expansion of the province’s electricity grid by allowing the BC Energy Regulator (BCER) to handle permits for major projects like the North Coast Transmission Line (NCTL). This move aims to meet the growing demand for clean energy in northern BC, driven by industries such as mining, LNG, and hydrogen initiatives. The North Coast Transmission Line, a new 450-kilometre transmission line, will connect Prince George to Terrace and help address the region’s electricity needs. The BC Energy Regulator will expedite the permitting process and provide oversight throughout the project’s life cycle. The project is also expected to foster economic growth and create job opportunities, including through partnerships with First Nations. Legislative amendments will be made in spring 2025 to enable the BC Energy Regulator’s role in permitting. The expansion is vital for BC’s resource development potential and to meet climate targets.
