As the holiday season kicks into full swing, the City of Prince Rupert is reminding residents about the increased risk of house fires. Common holiday hazards include space heaters, overloaded circuits, and flammable decorations. Between 2010 and 2020, Christmas-related fires in B.C. caused 15 injuries, four deaths, and over $14.5 million in damage, according to the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
To reduce fire risks, the city advises residents to water Christmas trees daily to keep them fresh and green, as dry trees can ignite quickly. Keep trees, decorations, and wrapping paper away from heat sources like radiators or candles, and use flame-retardant decorations and LED lights, which produce less heat. Always turn off lights when not in use, and avoid overloading electrical outlets.
The city also recommends ensuring working smoke alarms, creating a fire escape plan, and using caution with cooking and candles. For a safe and happy holiday season, follow these tips and stay fire-aware.
