Despite a net loss of roughly 1,600 jobs, BC’s unemployment rate fell slightly to 5.4 percent in July.
That compares to the 5.6 percent rate registered in June, and reflects the province adding an estimated 4,100 full-time jobs across the month.
According to StatCan’s most recent labour force survey, that leaves BC with the fourth lowest unemployment rate among Canada’s provinces.
For the Northcoast and Nechako region specifically, unemployment hit 6.6 percent in July, the second highest of any region in BC.
It tails only the Cariboo’s 8 percent rate, with the Northeast rounding out the northern regions with a 5.2 percent rate.
BC’s drop in unemployment is owing largely to a loss of 11,000 members of the labour force, despite a population gain of about 10,000 in July.
