Treaty negotiations are winding down for a pair of Tsimshian Nations, but community members still have opportunities to provide input.
Both the Kitsumkalum and Kitselas First Nations are currently in Stage 5 of BC’s six phase treaty negotiation process.
That stage seeks to formalize agreements made throughout the process, concluding with the offical signing and ratification of a treaty agreement.
Previous phases identified rights and obligations related to land and resources, governance, laws and regulations, and financial relationships.
In the 90s, the two northwest Nations agreed to negotiate their treaties together, with both entering the current stage in 2015.
Now, they are inching closer to the final stage, which will focus on long-term implementation of the finalized treaty.
An open house is being held at the Skeena Middle School gym in Terrace at 1:00 on May 27th to update community members on the process.
