As one northern sawmill gets ready to restart operations, another is announcing unforeseen downtime.
Workers began returning to Skeena Sawmills in Terrace last week, as the mill ramps up to a planned May 29th re-opening.
It had closed down in early February amid cost, market, and fibre-supply challenges which have plagued the entire forestry industry lately.
Now, the mill will begin stockpiling inventory, in the hopes of a return to full capacity in the next few months.
Meanwhile, in Williams Lake, Tolko Industries is announcing two weeks of unscheduled downtime at their Lakeview Sawmill.
Operations will cease on May 19th, impacting roughly 50 employees, and will resume on June 5th.
Tolko says the donwtime is due to a significant increase in log cost, and a steep decline in lumber demand.
