COVID-19 is no longer classified as a global health emergency according to the World Health Organization.
In response, provincial health minister Adrian Dix and health officer Bonnie Henry said in a statement that although they’ve been transitioning out of the emergency phase of the pandemic, they’ll continue to monitor.
They say that a high level of population immunity primarily comes from vaccination and a combination of boosters and infection and has resulted in less severe outcomes for most people.
Vaccination requirements remain in place for healthcare workers, and during the transition, the province will continue to ensure their public health response will protect those most vulnerable to COVID-19.
The pair also say that like any other respiratory illness, measures like getting vaccinated, staying at home if you feel unwell, wearing a mask when experiencing respiratory symptoms, and practicing hygiene should continue to be taken.
