The First Nations Climate Initiative (FNCI) has received $1 million in federal funding.
The funding is coming through Natural Resources Canada, as part of the Indigenous Natural Resources Partnership. The funding was announced by Minister O’Regan and is being provided to assist the FNCI to continue to develop the means for First Nations to alleviate poverty and chief economic self-determination, while helping Canada make a globally significant contribution to mitigating climate change.
The Climate Initiative is a partnership that began with, the Nisga’a Lisims Government, Haisla Nation, Metlakatla First Nations and the Lax Kw’alaams Band, all locked on B.C.’s coast. Their goal was to answer the question, “is LNG part of the solution or part of the problem for climate change”?
Since its founding in 2019, the coalition involved in the Climate Initiative and in support of the draft FNCI Climate Change Policy Framework, has grown to over 70 nations. The FNCI is currently working on a Memorandum of Understanding with the B.C. Business Council.
