Kitimat station now recognized as heritage railway station by federal government

The Government of Canada designated the Kitimat station as a heritage railway station on Monday.

The station was built in 1955 and is located near the railway. The station was originally built to bring people in before the construction of a highway. It has been recognized as a municipal heritage site since 1985.

Mayor Phil Germuth says he hopes the federal recognition of the Kitimat Railway Station means they can now “get access to some federal funds to fix it back up,” adding that “there are so many numerous things that the inside maybe used for, it could be a farmers market or entrepreneurs market.”

Germuth noted the importance of heritage sites and the significance that is brought to light by organizations like the Kitimat Heritage Group, that plays a role in preserving the history and heritage sites of Kitimat.
