The government of Canada is adding more to a fund that aims at expanding high-speed Internet to Canadians in rural and remote communities.
In a statement the government says that 98 percent of Canadians will be connected by 2026. The fund also includes $50 million dedicated to improving mobile Internet availability in Indigenous Communities. This includes projects along highways and roads.
The program was first announced in the budget of 2019 as a $1 billion fund. Now the government has bumped that to $1.75 billion to advance projects with partners such as the Federal Infrastructure Financing Agency.
Also announced was a $600 million deal with Telesat to secure capacity on Telesat’s LEO satellite constellation.
