The Carrier Tribal Council is calling for more transparency from Fisheries and Oceans Canada on its intentions around transitioning from open-net fish farms to land-based closed containment.
This week DFO announced its determination through nine risk assessments on pathogens and their danger to wild salmon populations. DFO determined the risk would be minimal to sockeye populations in the Fraser River. These assessments did not include sea lice, which is a known risk to juvenile wild salmon from open-net fish farms.
The announcement comes days before a deadline previously set out by the Cohen Commission recommendation that if DFO cannot prove less than minimal harm to B.C. wild salmon from fish farms in the Discovery Islands, then these farms must be removed by Sept. 30, 2020.
The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council are calling for the full commitment of DFO staff and financial investment in the path forward as critical steps in a collaborative approach to restoring this species.
