Just ahead of the totem pole raising ceremony dedicated to MMIWG / LGTBQ2+ on Kitsumkalum Territory, I had the chance to speak with Mike Dangeli, the artist and carver commissioned to design and create the pole. In our interview, I got to speak to him about not only the meanings behind the icons on the totem, but also about what it meant to him personally to be part of something so important, and how he came to be involved. In this episode of Journeys, Mike will walk us through the intricate details of the freshly raised symbol, as well as how he faced some internet backlash while sharing his carving process over the past year of work.
