In a statement released by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office following American military action in Venezuela this past Saturday, January 3rd, The Prime Minister said the Canadian Government ‘welcomes the opportunity for freedom, democracy, peace, and prosperity for the Venezuelan people’ noting that Canada has not recognized the Maduro government ‘since it stole the 2018 election.’
Prime Minister Carney noted that one of the first actions taken by his government in March of 2025 was to implement a fresh round of sanctions on the Maduro Government, at the time calling it a corrupt, brutally oppressive and criminal regime while condemning its gross and systematic violations of human rights.
In light of this weekend’s military action, the Carney Government has called on all parties involved to respect international law, and expressed its support of the Venezuelan people’s sovereign right to decide and build their own future in a peaceful and democratic society. The Prime minister adds that Canada will continue to support Venezuelan refugees and Canadians on the ground in Venezuela through consular officials and the Canadian embassy in neighbouring Bogota, Columbia.
