Federal NDP Leader Don Davies has condemned the recent US military action in Venezuela as an illegal breach of international law, and has also condemned both the Liberal Government of Canada and the Conservative Party of Canada for failing to speak out strongly against it.
In a social media post on January 5th, Davies said ‘the Liberals have been weak & afraid to call out illegal US actions. They are putting economic interests ahead of truth, values and law.’ He continues, ‘Conservatives claim to believe in law and order – except if illegality suits their ideology.’
Davies said remarks by President Trump in the aftermath of the military action, indicating that US oil companies would be taking over production within the Venezuelan oil sector, reveals what he says was the true nature of the attack: seizing control of Venezuelan oil reserves, the largest oil reserves in the world.
He also speculated that a planned intervention in Venezuela may have been why, as he put it, ‘Trump has been so hesitant to hold Putin to account for his invasion of Ukraine.’
‘Maybe this reveals why Trump has been so hesitant to hold Putin to account for his invasion of Ukraine. The US can have no credibility upholding international law and the rights of nations when it blatantly violates those principles itself.’ – Federal NDP Leader Don Davies on US intervention in Venezuela
The NDP has called on the Liberal government to take a strong stance on the matter, ‘consistent with our values’.
