There was a fire at a construction camp near the entrance of Port Edward’s Watson Island this past Friday, January 2nd, but the fire was quickly contained and no injuries had been reported.
Prince Rupert City officials confirmed that fire departments from Prince Rupert and Port Edward were called to the scene just after 2:00am on January 2nd, and found work trailers engulfed in flames.
While fire crews had worked quickly to mobilize a fire break and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby administration buildings, City officials say there was significant damage to the camp.
Aside from the maintenance staff on-site who reported the fire, city officials say the site was vacant at the time the fire broke out.
The Prince Rupert RCMP alongside local fire departments are now investigating the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, in a social media post, AltaGas confirmed that the site is a work camp housing employees and contractors involved in the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility (REEF) Project, but said that no REEF personnel were on-site at the time, and that the camp operations staff who were, were safely evacuated.
The company confirmed they’re now working to find interim accommodations for displaced employees, and are also looking at developing a long-term housing solution for the site.
