Northern Health is advising residents of Masset, Old Masset, Tow Hill, and Port Clements that the Emergency Department at Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital will be operating with reduced hours until January 5th due to staffing challenges.
Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, December 24th, Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital’s Emergency Department will only be open between 8am and 3pm daily.
These reduced hours will remain in effect until January 5th.
Outside of these hours, patients needing emergency or urgent care will be redirected to Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre in Daajing Giids.
As usual during periods of Emergency Department deferrals, anyone experiencing a life-threatening emergency, such as chest pain, trouble breathing or severe bleeding, should call BC Emergency Health Services at 1-800-461-9911 for assessment and ambulance transport to the nearest available facility.
During this time, Northern Health says appointments at the Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital medical clinic will be limited, as staff focus on maintaining emergency and acute care services. Some patients needing primary care may be seen in the emergency department during its open hours.
As such, those in need of non-urgent care, including patients without a family doctor, have been asked to make use of the Northern Health Virtual Primary and Community Care Clinic at 1-844-645-7811, available daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Indigenous residents and their family members can also access the First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day by calling 1-855-344-3800, available seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m
Operations at Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital should return to normal after January 5th.
