The federal government is investing nearly $20 million to upgrade disaster mitigation infrastructure at Gingolx Harbour, the largest in the Nisga’a Nation territory in British Columbia. The project addresses increasing risks from rising sea levels and stronger storms that threaten the harbour, its vessels, and the surrounding shoreline.
The planned upgrades include extending and elevating the existing breakwater to provide better protection against extreme weather, creating a sheltered channel for boats, and reducing silt buildup from the Nass River. These improvements will protect fish habitats, stabilize the shoreline, and ensure the harbour remains functional for Indigenous and commercial fishing fleets, Coast Guard vessels, and community boats.
Gingolx, known as the “Seafood Capital of the Nass,” depends heavily on the harbour for its economy and cultural traditions. The investment will safeguard the livelihoods of residents, preserve critical fishing operations, and enhance safety for vessels during rough seas.
This project is part of the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, which supports infrastructure upgrades to help communities withstand climate-related risks. With these improvements, Gingolx is set to strengthen its resilience against the impacts of climate change, ensuring the harbour remains a vital resource for future generations.
