The Iskut Band is moving forward with plans to address two long standing community priorities by investing in new housing and repairs to the Klappan Road.
Housing remains one of the community’s most pressing needs. The Band has gathered housing applications and says priority will be given to members who are homeless, living in overcrowded conditions, or in urgent need of safe housing.
The current plan is for approximately 15 new housing units, although the final number, building type, and locations have not yet been determined. With limited land available, the Band is exploring options including modular housing. After being denied outside funding, the Band says it will move ahead by financing the project itself, with a goal of having work underway by December, subject to planning, procurement, land availability, and construction schedules.
The Band has also committed one million dollars in own source revenue toward repairs on the Klappan Road. The project will be completed with support from Tahltan Nation Development Corporation and community members who volunteered to help guide the work.
Deputy Chief Feddie Louie said the community cannot wait indefinitely for outside funding while members continue to face homelessness and overcrowding. Chief Marie Quock said the Klappan Road remains essential to the community’s land use and way of life, adding that the repairs reflect a community led effort supported by the Band, Tahltan Nation Development Corporation, and local volunteers.
