An air quality warning is in effect for the Bulkley Valley, including Smithers, due to elevated levels of coarse particulate matter in the air.
Environment Canada and the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks issued the warning early Wednesday morning, January 21, in collaboration with Northern Health. Officials say the current air conditions may pose health risks, particularly for infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic health conditions such as asthma, COPD, heart disease, or diabetes.
People who work or exercise outdoors are being advised to reduce or reschedule strenuous activities. Health officials say staying indoors can help limit exposure, especially during periods when air quality is poorest. Using clean, good-quality air filters or certified portable air cleaners can also help protect indoor air.
Some people may experience mild symptoms such as eye, nose, or throat irritation, headaches, or a mild cough. Less common but more serious symptoms can include wheezing, chest pain, or shortness of breath. Anyone experiencing ongoing or severe symptoms is advised to seek medical attention.
Officials say the air quality warning is expected to remain in place until weather conditions improve or emissions are reduced. Residents are also encouraged to check in on Elders, young children, and others who may be more affected by poor air quality.
Current air quality conditions and updates are available through Environment Canada and the B.C. government’s air quality information pages.
