Auntie’s Kitchen, a victim services-led initiative in Smithers, provides a much-needed space for healing and connection for women affected by violence. Created by Shannon William, a Police-Based Victim Services worker, Auntie’s Kitchen was born from the need for meaningful support beyond policing. The program offers a supportive environment where women can share experiences, engage in healing conversations, and build community ties.
The initiative is a partnership between the Smithers RCMP and Northern Society for Domestic Peace (NSDP), with backing from Tri-Rivers Métis. Recent workshops have focused on topics such as personality types, building empathy, grief, and healthy relationships. Upcoming sessions will address legal protection orders and fostering resilience.
Shannon William saw a gap in services while working with victims and survivors, and Auntie’s Kitchen is designed to help bridge that gap. The program emphasizes prevention, aiming to support women before crises occur and strengthen families as they rebuild.
Auntie’s Kitchen is currently full, but those interested in participating in future sessions can contact Shannon William at the Smithers RCMP Detachment for more information.
