A commercial fisherman has been fined nearly $37,000 for illegal halibut fishing in Haida Gwaii, B.C. Stefan Grega, owner of the Pacific Sunrise, pleaded guilty to multiple offences under the federal Fisheries Act related to the 2022-23 halibut fishery. Grega’s violations included fishing during a closed season, using illegal fishing gear, and selling fish caught during restricted periods. These actions occurred on May 4 and 5, 2022. The total fine consists of $30,000 for the violations and $6,989.35 for proceeds from the illegal catch. The Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) says the case was brought to light through a combination of dockside monitoring, electronic systems, and onboard observers, all of which are part of B.C.’s highly regulated groundfish fisheries. The DFO also urges the public to report any violations of the Fisheries Act to help protect marine ecosystems and ensure sustainable fishing practices for future generations.
