Yesterday students at Caledonia Secondary School experienced a sobering demonstration of the dangers of impaired driving, just in time for the graduation season. A staged two-vehicle collision, complete with over 20 first responders and 10 emergency vehicles, took place in the school parking lot before lunch. A crowd of mostly silent students observed as student actors, realistically made up to resemble victims, lay scattered around a red sedan and an SUV that had flipped on its side. Terrace RCMP officers arrived first, followed by firefighters from the Terrace and Thornhill Volunteer Fire Departments, and paramedics from the provincial ambulance service. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free those trapped, while paramedics and officers worked to stabilize the injured. In the midst of the chaos, a teen driver was escorted away, arrested for suspected impaired driving, and placed in the back of a police vehicle. The staged crash aimed to remind students of the serious consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
